It was generally regarded as the halfway point, where travelers would stay overnight and be ferried across the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Delaware_River\">Delaware River<\/a>\u00a0the next morning. The section of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U.S._Route_202\">U.S. Route 202<\/a>\u00a0that passes just north of New Hope is still named York Road, and the original route is now Bridge Street (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pennsylvania_Route_179\">PA 179<\/a>).<\/p><p>New Hope was first called &#8220;Coryell&#8217;s Ferry,&#8221; after the owner of the ferry business. The current name came into use following a fire in 1790 that destroyed several mills in the area; their reconstruction was considered a &#8220;new hope.&#8221;<\/p><p>The night prior to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Washington%27s_crossing_of_the_Delaware_River\">George Washington&#8217;s crossing of the Delaware River<\/a>, Washington lodged in New Hope, and then destroyed the ferry so the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Army_during_the_American_Revolutionary_War\">British Army<\/a>\u00a0could not follow him. Much of that water is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Delaware_River\">Delaware River<\/a>.<\/p><p>The borough is located at the confluence of the Delaware River and Aquetong (Ingham) Creek, which begins its two-mile course in neighboring\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solebury_Township,_Pennsylvania\">Solebury Township<\/a>\u00a0at Ingham Springs, the most productive spring in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The name Aquetong comes from a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unami_language\">Lenape<\/a>\u00a0word meaning &#8220;spring in the bushes,&#8221;<a href=\"#cite_note-5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0while Ingham refers to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samuel_D._Ingham\">Samuel D. Although most summer days are slightly humid in New Hope, episodes of heat and high humidity can occur with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heat_index\">heat index<\/a>\u00a0values &gt; 107\u00a0\u00b0F (42\u00a0\u00b0C).
