The decrease is credited to the many college-aged students leaving the township bound for college. The housing boom of the nineties resulted in a large increase in the adolescent population, who have since reached adulthood and left the township.<a href=\"#cite_note-5\"><sup>[<\/sup><u><sup>5<\/sup><\/u><sup>]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0Still many smaller housing developments and some corporate centers have been constructed since 2000, the latter especially the Stony Hill Road corridor around\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interstate_295_(Delaware%E2%80%93Pennsylvania)\"><u>I-295<\/u><\/a>, beginning with office complexes 1000 to 1040 Stony Hill Road in 1998, followed by 600 to 800 Township Line Road (at Township Line and Stony Hill), 777 Township Line Road (the first green building in Bucks County), and a new age-restricted housing complex under construction at 645 Stony Hill Road, near the township&#8217;s retail district. However, the township has been well-planned and maintains a strong balance<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Please_clarify\"><em><u><sup><i>clarification needed<\/i><\/sup><\/u><\/em><\/a><sup>]<\/sup>\u00a0between growth and preservation, and is considered<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"#Unsupported_attributions\"><em><u><sup><i>by whom?<\/i><\/sup><\/u><\/em><\/a><sup>]<\/sup>\u00a0to be very desirable for the high quality of life it offers residents.<\/p><p>On December 19, 2007, a committee was formed to work to bring a veterans&#8217; monument to Lower Makefield Township. On October 15, 2008, the Lower Makefield Supervisors unanimously approved designating the site of the farmers&#8217; market (known as Pocket Park) as a veterans&#8217; monument. On November 9, Pocket Park was officially renamed Veterans Square. The population density was 1,821.8 inhabitants per square mile (703.4\/km<sup>2<\/sup>). There were 11,931 housing units at an average density of 665.1 per square mile (256.8\/km<sup>2<\/sup>). The racial makeup of the township was 93.32%\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_(U.S._Census)\"><u>White<\/u><\/a>, 1.81%\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African_American_(U.S._Census)\"><u>African American<\/u><\/a>, 0.07%\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Native_American_(U.S._Census)\"><u>Native American<\/u><\/a>, 3.72%\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asian_(U.S._Census)\"><u>Asian<\/u><\/a>, 0.29% from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Race_(United_States_Census)\"><u>other races<\/u><\/a>, and 0.78% from two or more races.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hispanic_(U.S._Census)\"><u>Hispanic<\/u><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latino_(U.S._Census)\"><u>Latino<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of any race were 1.42% of the population.<\/p><p>There were 11,706 households, out of which 40.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.5% were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marriage\"><u>married couples<\/u><\/a>\u00a0living together, 5.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.8% were non-families. 16.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.13.<\/p><p>In the township, the population was spread out, with 27.6% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 males.<\/p><p>The median income for a household in the township was $98,090, and the median income for a family was $106,908 (these figures had risen to $112,677 and $128,314 respectively as of a 2007 estimate<a href=\"#cite_note-11\"><sup>[<\/sup><u><sup>11<\/sup><\/u><sup>]<\/sup><\/a>). Males had a median income of $80,329 versus $47,138 for females. The State of Pennsylvania has selected The Garden of Reflection as the Official Pennsylvania 9-11 Memorial, and it was formally dedicated on September 30, 2006. The $1.4 million memorial, designed by Yardley architect Liuba Laschyk, includes twin fountains representing the towers of the World Trade Center; a Walk of Remembrance, with a series of glass panels etched with the names of the 2,973 people who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks; and a memorial rail etched with the names of the 17 residents from Bucks County who were killed. Shady Brook Farm has a large Farm Market and Garden Center, and hosts many events, including Pumpkin Fest and HorrorFest in the fall, Santa&#8217;s Village and the Holiday Light Show during the Christmas season, and the Annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Easter_Egg_Hunt\"><u>Easter Egg Hunt<\/u><\/a>, as well as others throughout the year, including the Wine Concert Series and Apple Festival.<\/p><p>In June 2006 at the 88th Annual Bucks County Fireman&#8217;s Association Parade in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quakertown,_Pennsylvania\"><u>Quakertown, Pennsylvania<\/u><\/a>, the all-volunteer Yardley-Makefield Fire Company won best overall fire department, as well as first place awards in the following categories: marine unit, deputy or chief&#8217;s vehicle, aerial tower, over 1,500 gallon-a-minute engine, light rescue pumper, 1965 and older motorized apparatus, and best marching unit with music.<\/p><p>The Slate Hill Cemetery, located at Yardley-Morrisville Rd. at Mahlon Dr. in Lower Makefield Township, is open to the public and is possibly the oldest burying grounds in Bucks County. It was established in 1690 and the earliest gravestone is dated 1698. There are a number of unmarked graves, for which dates are unknown. These unmarked graves are believed to be the final resting-places of a number of the early settlers in Lower Makefield.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington_Crossing_Historic_Park\"><u>Washington Crossing Historic Park<\/u><\/a>\u00a0is located just over the Lower Makefield Township town line in the Washington Crossing section of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Upper_Makefield_Township,_Bucks_County,_Pennsylvania\"><u>Upper Makefield Township<\/u><\/a>. From this site, General\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Washington\"><u>George Washington<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and men of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Continental_Army\"><u>Continental Army<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and militia\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Washington%27s_crossing_of_the_Delaware_River\"><u>crossed the Delaware River<\/u><\/a>\u00a0on the night of December\u00a025\u201326, 1776 and marched to Trenton, New Jersey. There they\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Trenton\"><u>attacked and defeated<\/u><\/a>\u00a0Hessian troops quartered in and around the village. This surprise attack and victory set the stage for Washington&#8217;s subsequent victories at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_the_Assunpink_Creek\"><u>Second Battle of Trenton<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Princeton\"><u>Princeton<\/u><\/a>. Although most summer days are slightly humid in Lower Makefield Township, episodes of heat and high humidity can occur, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heat_index\"><u>heat index<\/u><\/a>\u00a0values &gt; 108\u00a0\u00b0F (42\u00a0\u00b0C).
