Personal buckets and ladders were used to extinguish the fire. Less than a month later, on July 4, 1890, a committee appointed by Perkasie Borough Council met to form the Hope Fire Company. On September 8, 1890, the Hope Fire Company met at Groover&#8217;s Hall (517 Chestnut Street) and adopted a constitution and by-laws; 32 members were present. At the same time, borough council turned over to the fire company a hand pumper purchased from Newtown Fire Association, and a hose cart purchased from Philadelphia with 800 feet (240\u00a0m) of hose. This massive fire was started by two 12-year-old boys who were playing with a lighter near the coal bins behind the Shelley &amp; Sons lumberyard at Seventh and Market Streets. The fire was fought by about 300 firefighters who came from over 50 fire companies in three counties. Among the historic buildings lost were the American House and the Moyer-Kantner Funeral Home, both dating from 1870; the Herstine Building; and the J.G. Moyer building. Buck<\/u><\/a>\u00a0House at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_Hills_Farm\"><u>Green Hills Farm<\/u><\/a>, which is on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Register_of_Historic_Places\"><u>National Register of Historic Places<\/u><\/a>, is located near Perkasie in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hilltown_Township,_Pennsylvania\"><u>Hilltown Twp.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-037abaf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"037abaf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Interurban trolley to Philadelphia<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d2e80b1 Table0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d2e80b1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>From 1901 to 1951, Perkasie was an important stop on the hourly running Lehigh Valley Transit Company&#8217;s electric interurban trolley line from Allentown through Quakertown to Perkasie, then south to Sellersville, Souderton, Lansdale, Norristown, and Philadelphia. During\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\"><u>World War II<\/u><\/a>, as the result of gasoline rationing with auto use restricted, it transported a very large number of passengers. After the war, the railway&#8217;s business collapsed, and it ceased service in 1951. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.25.<\/p><p>In the borough the population was spread out, with 29.6% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.4 males.<\/p><p>The median income for a household in the borough was $52,000, and the median income for a family was $59,413. Males had a median income of $42,388 versus $28,323 for females. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Per_capita_income\"><u>per capita income<\/u><\/a>\u00a0for the borough was $21,986. 4.7% of the population and 4.2% of families were below the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poverty_line\"><u>poverty line<\/u><\/a>. The nearest Interstate Highways are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interstate_476\"><u>I-476<\/u><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interstate_276\"><u>I-276<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interstate_78_in_Pennsylvania\"><u>I-78<\/u><\/a>.<\/p><p>The borough&#8217;s nearest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Airport\"><u>airport<\/u><\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pennridge_Airport\"><u>Pennridge Airport<\/u><\/a>, a public general aviation airport with one 4,200-foot (1,300\u00a0m)-long runway. It is just north of the center of town, on the other side of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Rockhill_Township,_Bucks_County,_Pennsylvania\"><u>East Rockhill Township<\/u><\/a>\u00a0border.<\/p><p>There is currently no public transportation in Perkasie.<a href=\"#cite_note-13\"><sup>[<\/sup><u><sup>13<\/sup><\/u><sup>]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0Perkasie was once served by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reading_Company\"><u>Reading Railroad<\/u><\/a>&#8216;s North Penn Division, also known as the Bethlehem Branch, which was once part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Pennsylvania_Railroad\"><u>North Pennsylvania Railroad<\/u><\/a>. The line is now owned by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SEPTA\"><u>SEPTA<\/u><\/a>, which ended passenger service in the early 1980s. The last SEPTA-operated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bethlehem_Line\"><u>Bethlehem Line<\/u><\/a>\u00a0Philadelphia-bound passenger train passed through Perkasie on July 29, 1981.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conrail\"><u>Conrail<\/u><\/a>\u00a0subsequently continued freight operations out of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lansdale,_Pennsylvania\"><u>Lansdale<\/u><\/a>\u00a0up to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quakertown,_Pennsylvania\"><u>Quakertown<\/u><\/a>\u00a0until the mid 90s. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Penn_Railroad\"><u>East Penn Railroad<\/u><\/a>, formally known as East Penn Railway (EPRY), leased a portion of the railroad from SEPTA, saving the line from abandonment from Telford through to Quakertown. SEPTA recently issued a formal proposal to perform maintenance on the line and restore passenger service, either installing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Overhead_lines\"><u>catenary<\/u><\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_locomotive\"><u>electric trains<\/u><\/a>, or using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diesel_locomotive\"><u>diesel trains<\/u><\/a>\u00a0connecting to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lansdale\/Doylestown_Line\"><u>Lansdale\/Doylestown Line<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lansdale,_Pennsylvania\"><u>Lansdale<\/u><\/a>. The project would take at least five years.<\/p><p>As of late 2009, unmarked freight cars, particularly covered hoppers, are stored along the southbound track in Perkasie between Market Street and Park Avenue, from Park Avenue to the Old Bethlehem Pike Bridge, and so on to Meetinghouse Road in Telford. East Penn through Perkasie with ex-Conrail B23-7 3153 runs about two to three times a week, passing through Perkasie to Telford, and again passing through Perkasie while returning to Quakertown. The trains usually run between 10:00am and 4:00pm during the week.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-05b8f15 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"05b8f15\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Utilities<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e7b2066 Table0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e7b2066\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Perkasie Borough Electric Department provides electricity to the borough. The electric department originated out of a need to improve street lighting, using a generator before a power plant was built in 1900. In 1947, with the growth in demand for electricity, the borough kept the electric distribution system but begin receiving electricity wholesale from Pennsylvania Power &amp; Light (now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PPL_Corporation\"><u>PPL Corporation<\/u><\/a>). A modern substation serving the borough&#8217;s electric system was constructed in 1995.
